Varlam Simonisvili
Varlam Simonishvili was one of the best musician in Georgian folk song genre. He played a great role in collection, preservation and development of folk songs of Guria region. He was born in Guria, Ozurgeti small town. A prominent singer of that time Anton Dumbadze was his teacher. He taught him Western style of Georgian folk songs were Gurian approach was very strong. In fact, Anton Dumbadze and his son – David were the last representatives of that style. This is why that style was called after their name – “Dumbadze kilo”.
Varlam Simonishvili made acquainted with well-known singers – trio Chavleishvili and Besarion Inskirveli, Alexandre Maharadze, Ladiko Dolidze. The firs recording of that ensemble was made in Kutaisi in 1908.
Under Varlam Simonishvili's initiative the Chorus of Young singers was established in 1910. They took the first prize in 1927 on the all-Georgia competition of folk singers. In 1934 - 1936 in Moscow they made recording of 20 Gurian songs. The songs are considered as masterpieces because of their amazing improvisation and new approach in different voices variable lines.
